Another Maskfest has come and gone. Once again it was an amazing time. I know I say this every year, but it was my all-time fav. There were certainly more monster masks in one room that in previous years (and that's no small task). And while that was the back drop for a good time,  I had an even better time hanging out with old friends,  meeting a few new mask makers,  and putting faces to some collectors I have known for a while but never met in person.

Like in previous years, I failed to get 100% percent photo coverage of the Maskfest room. My apologies to those that missed. Some of the glaring omissions I am aware of include the Raging Zombie Studios table. I had such a good time talking with Elliot & Samantha that I completely forgot to take any shots. I also missed the Monster Girls table, Andrew Santagato's table, as well as my own Devil's Workshop tables, and some others.

On the Thursday before Maskfest, the Night Owl Green Ghoul and I made the hour and a half trek into Indiana to visit Death Studios. Jeff Death was kind enough to let us geek out and dig through his old box of photo archives. Here are a few of the goodies that we found...

The "Megas Man" sculpture from the cover of Questar Magazine

"Carnivore" &  "Entity"

"The Damned" & "Gremlin" sculpts

"Dead Meat" sculpt

"Rat Fink", "Lil Brother", "Carnivore", "The Boss" & a "Gargoyle"

Well, somehow the Yellow Phantom made it halfway through the day before realizing that it was Friday the 13th!?! This odd oversight leads us to a rarity here on the Blood Curdling Blog of Monster Masks... the infamous double post o' doom...

This Jason Vorhees cut-out mask was a free download on the official Friday the 13th movie website. Unfortunately the site is long gone and replaced with a "buy the Blu-Ray" page...

This single page scan of the Don Post Calendar Re-issues came from the 1998 Morris catalog. It shows nice clean photos of the line-up including the Wolfman and Mummy A and B variations, which many collectors (including myself) still have trouble identifying without seeing them side by side...

We've got another double-post day here today. First up are a variety of 1980's Don Post Studios mask tags/ care sheets. A big thanks goes out to the CreepingDead for providing the originals to be scanned. Forgive me for the obnoxious watermarks, I want to make sure these remain used for reference, and not printed and passed off as originals.

2004 Don Post Studios Catalog

The 2004 Don Post catalog strikes a nice overall balance. The line-up wasn't too bloated, as it had a good blend of original characters and big name modern licensed characters which ranged from Freddy, Jason, Myers, and Leatherface.

In addition, the catalog featured some Rob Zombie designs, and some gorgeous Ed "Big Daddy" Roth designs. I can't say enough about the over sized Rat Fink mask. I don't own one, but every time I see  CreepingDead's collection in person, I am amazed at the quality of the DPS Rat Fink mask. It is easily among the studio's best work of the last 25 years...

The catalog winds down with some Illusive Concepts masks and some stunning Stan Winston Creatures Signatures Collection masks. I can't recall ever seeing one of these monstrosities in person. Although I'm doubtful that they look as good as they appear in the catalog, the designs are simply amazing! I could be wrong though, the Rat Fink mask looks as good, or even better than the catalog photo.
