1987 Great Cover Up Catalog

This catalog comes via a trade with another mask collector in a swap of catalogs and is hot off the scanner! The masks featured in this catalog are all over the spectrum in terms of character and origin. The Savage Eye Great Goblin greets readers upon opening the catalog and is followed by a slew of older Mario Chiodo / Illusive Concepts masks. There is even a full page of Savage Eye designs on page 8, which is the first time I've had the opportunity to post color pics of Savage Eye masks here on the Monster Mask blog. Thanks goes out to Gene for making these and the others available and filling a few more holes in the Monster Mask Catalog Archives

1981-82 R. Quinn Studios Catalog

This is another catalog comes via the trade mentioned yesterday. It's the first R. Quinn Studios catalog I have ever seen in person. The catalog has a few interesting monsters and Aliens mixed in among the character masks.

I don't know much about the studio, but I'm usually drawn to their work in the few instances I've seen them in Johnson Smith catalogs and old Morris Costumes catalogs. According to the catalog, several Kirk Brady & Bill Nelson pieces were added to the line-up for 1981...

The Monster Makers series is a monthly look at the men that made the monsters. Many FX and make-up men started as garage mask and monsters makers. Some graduated to making rubber monster masks or monster suits for Hollywood films. Still others went on to produce revolutionary effects...

This edition of the Monster Makers series features a six-page article from Famous Monsters #105 entitled "Rick Baker... Monster Maker" which showcases the early work of the young artist...

One of the more unique items I have in my monster mask catalog collection is this original cellophane of 1967 Collegeville Costume catalog illustrations. There are actually 4 sheets stapled together each containing a different color (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black) which combine to make the final image...

There are a number of classic characters depicted on the contact sheet, here are a few blown-up...

Block Party Time

I'm taking a day away from the computer and prying myself out of the studio today for our annual block party. As soon as I finish typing this I have tents to set up and chairs and tables to bring up from the basement before friends and family arrive.

Strange things tend to happen at this event. It's been a few years since I broke out the Gorilla suit and scared the wits out of unsuspecting intoxicated neighbors. It might have to happen again tonight if I can get both feet in the suit before having too many libations myself. Happy Saturday to all you creeps out there in webby-land!

Headhunters Quarterly Vol. 1 Num. 1

In the process of chronologically posting all the Headhunters Quarterly issues I was surprised to find that I was missing two issues. Thanks to a generous mask collector who sent over a big-ass package of monster mask catalogs, I once again have these two issues...

First up, the official Issue #1, which was actually the second issue that was released by HHQ following the initial Preview Issue.

This issue was released during a particularly fun time in the hobby. As Jim Kessler mentions in the Head-itorial, both the Monstermakers "How-To Guide" and "Dr. Lady's Guide to Movie and T.V. Monster Masks" were recently released. In addition, monster mask related articles were beginning to pop up in publications such as Scary Monsters magazines. On a personal level, I had just made my first monster mask back in 1995 when this issue hit the scene and was thrilled to death to find a source of information made for monster mask lovers like myself!

Looking back at the "Cool New Stuff" section these days brings back some great memories. I had scored a copy of the McDoogals "Extra Terrestrial Alien Skull" back at the Chicago Rezin Headz convention in 1996 or 97. This was the first con that I had set up a table to sell masks as the Devil's Workshop. If memory serves me right, I traded Jeff Wehenkel one of my masks for the Alien Skull. It was truly a cool moment for this young mask maker!

I also remember visiting Doug Goin's shop for the first time and seeing some hand-made independent artist pieces including the Wehenkel "Slim" mask pictured in the page above and being blown away by the quality of piece. Again, a very cool time and place for a young mask lover.

This "Customizing Your Creatures" article by Jim Kessler is something that any hard-core mask collector, or amateur home-haunter should read...

And finally, the issue winds down with some photos of Dante Renta's vast collection...

2000 Dynamic Designs International Catalog

Dynamic Designs is run by Darren Perks (the sculptor of the Don Post Studios Calendar mask re-issues). While the Dynamic Designs website still exists, I'm not sure if they are actually still in business. My only interaction with the company was several years ago when I purchased a blank of the Retro Monster. It was a rather drawn out and unorthodox buying experience to say the least, but the mask is very cool and can be seen on page two...

2000 Mario Chiodo Signature Series Catalog

It seems appropriate to piggyback yesterday's Illusive Concepts 2000 catalog post with the 2000 Mario Chiodo Signature Series catalog. Most mask collectors know that Mario Chiodo is the creative mastermind behind Illusive Concepts, the company that set a new bar for creating large, over-sized, super creative characters.

Mr. Chiodo raised the bar once again with what has to be the most elaborate and massive latex masks ever offered to the public. The character and attention to detail in these masks is absolutely stunning...

This in-depth article describes the story of how the Don Post Studios Calendar masks reissues came to be. Death Studios Mailers

Back in the day these black and white mailers would accompany Death Studios catalogs, or ship in the box of any Death Studios mask order. It was always a thrill to see a glimpse of any new Death Studios mask before it officially appeared in any catalog. Unfortunately, I have long since lost the collection of these mailers I had. But I recently acquired a small stash of these in a catalog swap. Here's a few fresh off the ol' scanner...
