Morris Catalog Monday: 1982 Mask Catalog
Happy Monday creeps, and welcome back to the ongoing series entitled Morris Catalog Monday which features random scans from old Morris Costume catalogs. Hope you all had a jolly Christmas weekend. This will be the last MCM post of 2015.
Most of the content of the 1982 Morris mask catalog has already been posted here, here, and here, but the cover is too cool to be left behind. So here it is in it's full glory adored with an illustration from Jim Lawrence...

Mask Tag Tuesday: Be Something Studios
Greetings Creeps and welcome to the second post in a new ongoing series entitled Mask Tag Tuesday. Your ol' pal the Yellow Phantom has a serious stockpile of mask tags to share and I'll be doing so periodically on Tuesdays. The eventual goal is to create an archive similar to that of the Monster Mask Catalog Archive. Please excuse the heavy watermarking, I do not want to see these used to create reproduction tags that are passed off as originals.
Today's Mask Tag Tuesday features late 1980's/ early 90's Be Something Studios mask tags. This bold orange and black style tag was the standard for BSS masks for almost two decades. I have a good two dozen more of these that I'll eventually scan and share, but in the meantime enjoy these Unleashed Wickedness and Bone Apart tags...

Morris Catalog Monday: Don Post Calendar Reissues
Happy Monday creeps, and welcome to Morris Catalog Monday which features random scans from old Morris Costume catalogs. Hope you all had a safe and festive New Year celebration. This is the first MCM post of 2016.
To kick off this new year, let's take a trip back to the 1999 Morris catalog which featured the Don Post Studios Calendar mask reissues. Seventeen years after their release, it's hard to quantify in words just how exciting these reissues were to mask collectors. But, needless to say, this had to be the biggest news that any monster mask collector could have hoped for in a lifetime. Below is the page as it appeared in the 1999 catalog...
The pieces depicted in the ad are among the most beautiful Calendar mask copies one could ever hope to see. When this promo ad ran, the actual masks were still being produced. Therefore, the masks pictured were a combination of prototypes and pieces from private collections. Most of these masks featured eye inserts (which were not present in the production versions of these masks) and all were painted and haired by the very best in the business. Here are some higher resolution scans of the masks...

And now time for a little shameless self-promotion...
2016 marks the 20th anniversary of the Devil's Workshop. I seriously can't believe that it's been 20 years since I started the Devil's Workshop. To celebrate the milestone I'll be digging out some of the old molds as well and making some weird and wild variants. Each month will feature a 20th anniversary release. Stay tuned and check out the Devil's Workshop Instagram page in the next few days for the first release of the year! In addition, I'll be posting several 20th anniversary images and information here on the Monster Mask Blog throughout the year...

Weird and Wacky
Whew! It's been a crazy week here in Phantomland. Your ol' pal and the Mrs. have two new additions to the family in the form of newborn twin girls. I'll be taking longer breaks in between posts for a several months. I'll be needing spare time to catch up on sleep and to hang with the gals. In addition, I want to reserve any spare computer time for promoting the Devil's Workshop 20th anniversary. So in between new posts, enjoy the archives.
I also plan to open up a small store to sell the occasional mask. I have a handful that I no longer have room for from my personal collection that need good homes. I also have a good stack of old mask catalogs that I'll be selling here too.

While I'm still several months away from resuming regular posting, I thought it would be nice to post updates on the Devil's Workshop 20th Anniversary releases that have (and will) be coming out in 2016...
The first 20th anniversary release of the year is a one-off Crypt Keeper. The Crypt Keeper was originally released back in 1997 as "The Keeper" and was the first official replica collector series mask produced by the Devil's Workshop and was limited to 18 copies.
The finishes of the Keeper varied as the run went on. This is how the mask was finished near the end of the run...
Compared to how the first copies looked...
Here is a scan of the original mail-order flyer featuring the Crypt Keeper from the 1997 Devil's Workshop catalog...
The ol' bag of bones made an appearance in David Lady's Guide to Monster Masks...
Here is another shot of the Keeper along with the other collector series replicas that the Devil's Workshop was offering around 2000-2001...
With the February release already in the books, expect another post here covering the history of that mask sometime soon. And keep your eyes on the Devil's Workshop Instagram page for the March release coming up soon...

Still a ways to go before resuming regular posting, but in the meantime, here are the Death Studios sneak peek sculptures for the upcoming 2016 line-up. Although these photos have been online since February, it's been an annual tradition to post pics of the DS sneak peek sculpts here for many years. Plus, it felt good to log into the ol' blog again ;-)

Happy New Year Creeps!
Wow, 2017 came and went without any posting here on the ol' Blood Curdling Blog of Monster Masks, but that doesn't mean that this blog is dead. Far from it! Each month, over 1,000 of you rubber-lovin' head hunters still visit catalog posts; and over 12,000 posts from the archive are revisited re-read every month.
When I took time off from the blog, my intention was to spend time more time in the studio, and that has certainly been the case. I was more productive in 2017 than in any year in the past. These days I regularly post what's going on in the studio on the Devil's Workshop Instagram account. Feel free to join me there!
With that being said, I still do plan to bring back the blog at some point. Over the past 15 months since I've stopped posting, I've continued to build up a pile of mask related materials, and I have MUCH to share. In fact, just last week I was fortunate enough to score a beautiful 1952 Topstone catalog...
So fear not fellow mask freaks and rubber necks, the blog will indeed return. I don't have a date in mind, as I have a major pinball conversion project to tackle first, but I do indeed intend to bring this blog back when that is complete. I do miss firing up the old scanner and digitizing old ads, catalogs and articles.
In the meantime, enjoy the archives! In addition, enjoy these early months of the calendar year when a flurry of sneak peeks and new releases from mask makers 2018 lineups begin to appear. Hope to see a bunch of you at Maskfest this year. It's the 10th year for Maskfest and it's primed to be the best ever. Cheers!
